I'm a dad who fell back in love with board games so I could play them with my two kids, and now I share honest, parent-first reviews of what we love. I'm not on social media, I quit it a long time ago.

A family playing the Spaceteam card game together and learning the rules

New players learning the Spaceteam card game rules together before the first round.

Spaceteam rules are simple: 3 to 6 players fix malfunctions at once by shouting for tools and revealing all 6 Systems Go cards before the five minute timer runs out.

I am Spector, a dad to Alex, 7, and Emma, 10. This page is the rules reference we use in our house: what is in the box, how to set up, how a round runs, and how you win and lose. If you want help teaching it calmly to kids, our Spaceteam teaching guide for parents has the first game plan, and this page sticks to the rules.

How Spaceteam plays in one five minute round

Spaceteam plays as one loud five minute scramble with no turns where every player fixes cards at once.

Everyone works on their own sector of the ship at the same time. You read your active card, shout the exact tool you need, listen through the noise for a call that matches a tool in your hand, and pass tools to keep repairs moving. The crew wins together when all 6 Systems Go cards sit in the middle before time ends. If your family loves short cooperative card games, our Bandido beginner guide covers another box that plays fast with the same all win or all lose spirit.

What is in the Spaceteam box

The base box holds 90 cards plus a five minute timer, and knowing the four card types makes every round clearer.

Card typeCount in base boxWhat it does in a round
Tool cards24The blue backed hand you hold in Spaceteam and pass to fix cards. One of each tool exists in the box.
Malfunction cards45Your repair jobs. Each shows a Fix With box with 1 to 3 tools by name or image or tool type.
Anomaly cards15Shipwide events that make the crew act at once before you return to repairs.
Systems Go cards6The six ship systems you reveal and place in the middle to win.

Tools live in your hand. Malfunctions, anomalies, and Systems Go cards live in facedown stacks in front of each player. That split is the whole setup once you see it.

How to set up Spaceteam for a first game

You set up Spaceteam with two decks: tools in hand and a malfunction stack face down in front of each player.

  1. Divide all 24 blue backed tool cards evenly. Every tool stays in the game even with fewer players, so hands may differ by one card.
  2. Build the orange backed malfunction deck for your player count, add all 6 Systems Go cards, shuffle it, and divide it into even face down stacks, one stack per player.
  3. Set the five minute timer in the middle but do not start it until every player can see one active card and knows the passing rule.

Setup with separate hands and a shared goal will feel familiar if you have played another cooperative card game, and our The Mind rules guide walks through a similar shared table setup.

How a Spaceteam round runs with no turns

A round runs with no turns: start the timer, flip to one active card each, and fix, pass, and shout at once.

Read the Fix With box on your active malfunction and place the listed tools face up above it. If you hold the tool, play it. If not, shout its exact name and listen for help. Tools travel only to the player beside you, never across the table, and no player keeps more than 3 tools on the table at once. When all listed tools sit above the card, the malfunction is fixed. Discard it face down, take the tools back in hand, and reveal the next card in your stack.

Anomalies interrupt repairs. Read the card aloud, do what it says right away with the crew, discard it, and return to malfunctions. When a Systems Go card appears, shout its caption aloud and place it in the middle for all to see.

Our Family's Take

Our loudest win came when Emma shouted for a tool Alex held two seats away. Alex could not reach across, so the tool traveled hand to hand around our small circle while the timer ticked. It reached Emma with seconds left and the four of us cheered, which taught both kids why the beside you rule matters.

How you win and lose Spaceteam

You win Spaceteam by revealing and placing all 6 Systems Go cards in the middle before time runs out.

There is no partial win and no single winner. The whole crew wins together or loses together when the timer ends. A loss is shared, so we blame the black hole and laugh and play again. Covering for each other is the skill that decides close rounds, and our Spaceteam teamwork guide goes deeper on calling tools and covering missed cards.

  • Similarities: Both are fully cooperative, both put the whole table on one side, and both end with a shared win or a shared loss.
  • Differences: Spaceteam is a loud scramble with no turns while a calm puzzle game moves one player at a time.
  • Why this game fans will enjoy it: If your crew loves teamwork but needs a quiet night, pick the calm box and save Spaceteam for a loud night.

Common Spaceteam rules mistakes to avoid

Most lost rounds come from three small rules mistakes, not from slow shouting.

  1. Passing across the table. Tools travel only to the player beside you, so plan a path hand to hand when the tool sits far away.
  2. Leaving more than 3 tools out. A tool on the table cannot help elsewhere until its malfunction is fixed, so pick tools back up after each fix.
  3. Waiting for a turn. There are none, so keep flipping and shouting while you listen for your tool name.

For a feel of how loud and fun a correct round gets, our Spaceteam review breaks down the pace and the appeal before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Spaceteam in a round?

You play Spaceteam by fixing the malfunction card in front of you while shouting for tools and listening for calls from the crew. Everyone plays at once with no turns until all 6 Systems Go cards are revealed or the five minute timer runs out.

What cards are in the Spaceteam box?

The base box holds 90 cards: 24 tool cards, 45 malfunction cards, 15 anomaly cards and 6 Systems Go cards plus a five minute timer. Tool cards have blue backs and the malfunction deck has orange backs.

How do you set up Spaceteam for a first game?

Deal all 24 tool cards evenly so every player holds tools in hand and build the malfunction deck by player count plus all 6 Systems Go cards. Divide that deck into even face down stacks, set the five minute timer in the middle and start together.

How do you fix a malfunction in Spaceteam?

Read the Fix With box and place the named tools or matching tool type icons face up above the card. When all listed tools are present the malfunction is fixed, so discard it face down, take the tools back in hand and reveal the next card.

What are anomaly cards in Spaceteam?

Anomaly cards are shipwide events that make the whole crew act at once, like changing seats or freezing play until the crew helps. Read the card aloud, do what it says right away and discard it, then return to malfunctions.

How do you win or lose Spaceteam?

The crew wins together by revealing and placing all 6 Systems Go cards in the middle before time runs out. If the timer ends first the ship is lost and everyone loses together, so a loss is shared and never blamed on one player.

Can you play Spaceteam with two players?

Two players is allowed but the publisher says it is not much fun because the hidden tool hunt disappears. Play with 3 to 6 players for the real game, since three is the true minimum where tools can hide across the table.
